Psychological Trauma in Veterans using EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques): A Randomized Controlled Trial
Presented at the 2009 Conference of the Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology (ACEP)
Dawson Church, Ingrid Dinter
Abstract:
A six session protocol of a brief and novel exposure therapy, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) has been
efficacious in reducing PTSD and co-occurring psychological symptoms in a within-subjects time series trial.
The current study uses a randomized design and a wait list control group (n=5). Experimental group subjects
(n=4) received six hour-long EFT coaching sessions, with pretest and posttest evaluations, as well as
intermediate tests after three sessions. PTSD was assessed using the PCL-M (Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
Checklist – Military), on which a score of <50 is clinical. The severity and breadth of psychological distress was
measured using the SA-45 (Symptom Assessment 45), a short form of the SCL-90. Neither symptoms nor
PTSD reduced in the wait list group during the passage of time. The breadth of psychological distress
diminished significantly in the EFT group (p<.013), as did the severity (p<.015). Average PTSD scores went
from 60 pre to 38 after six sessions of EFT (p<.007).  Preliminary EFT for Combat Veterans Study, presented
at the 2009 ACEP Conference The first, double blind EFT study for using EFT for Combat stress.

PSYCHOLOGICAL SYMPTOM CHANGE IN VETERANS AFTER SIX SESSIONS OF EMOTIONAL FREEDOM
TECHNIQUES (EFT):
AN OBSERVATIONAL STUDY, International Journal for Healing and Caring (IJHC) January 2009

Abstract: Protocols to treat veterans with brief courses of therapy are required, in light of the large numbers
returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with depression, anxiety, PTSD and other psychological problems. This
observational study examined the effects of six sessions of EFT on seven veterans, using a within-subjects,
time-series, repeated measures design. Participants were assessed using a well-validated instrument, the SA-
45, which has general scales measuring the depth and severity of psychological symptoms. It also contains
subscales for anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive behavior, phobic anxiety, hostility, interpersonal
sensitivity, paranoia, psychosis, and somatization. Participants were assessed before and after treatment, and
again after 90 days. Interventions were done by two different practitioners using a standardized form of EFT to
address traumatic combat memories. Symptom severity decreased significantly by 40% (p<.001), anxiety
decreased 46% (p<.001), depression 49% (p<.001), and PTSD 50% (p<.016). These gains were maintained
at the 90-day follow-up.3 Keywords: veterans, exposure therapy, depression, PTSD, anxiety, Iraq, Vietnam,

Steve Wells on phobias: Steve Wells and his associates in Australia conducted a ground breaking study on
the use of EFT for the treatment of specific phobias of small animals and insects which will be the first
controlled study of a meridianbased intervention ever to be published in a leading peer reviewed journal.

A Research Review of “Neurophysiological Indicators of EFT Treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress” :
Another EFT Research project has been completed and published in a peer review journal. The study was conducted
by Doctors Paul G. Swingle and Lee Pulos together with Mari K. Swingle and was professionally discussed in
this article by EFT Master Patricia Carrington, PhD.

Tapping therapies proving themselves in the aftermath of disasters: David Feinstein, Ph.D., has updated
"Energy Psychology in Disaster Relief," an article which describes the astounding results being reported by
organizations such as the Green Cross after introducing tapping into the treatment protocols following the
ethnic cleansing in Rwanda and Kosovo, the tsunami in Southeast Asia, Hurricanes Rita and Katrina, and a
dozen other settings.  Cases from EFTers Sophia Cayer and Roseanna Ellis are described.

An
EFT study: Reducing anxiety in dental patients with EFT: Gratitude to Graham Temple for this impressive
study involving anxiety in a dental office. Note that out of 30 patients, 100% reported a reduction in anxiety.

EFT brings about 80.7% sports performance improvement: Sam Smith from Australia kept accurate data on a
rugby kicking contest. The participants took free kicks from various distances and did so both before and after
doing EFT. After EFT, the combined improvement was 80.7%.

T
he results of Carol Look's eyesight experiment: In 2006, EFT Master Dr. Carol Look conducted an 8 week
study wherein over 100 people followed written instructions to use EFT for a variety of emotional and vision
issues.  The participants were worldwide and both the written instructions and the feedback were done via the
internet.  Accordingly, this qualifies as an experiment rather than a pristinely controlled scientific study.
Nonetheless, the results are eye opening (pardon the pun).  Also, great care was taken to properly report the
details and statistics regarding the experiment.

EFT improves Minerals, Amino Acids & Vitamins: Maggie Adkins had an analysis done to determine whether
any of her body's minerals, amino acids or vitamins was deficient. As Maggie explains, there were 17 deficient
readings.

Dr. Jack Rowe's research study on the long term effects of EFT (Using Borrowing Benefits): The outcome of
this study proved to be so promising that Jacks article reporting these results has been accepted for
publication in the peer-reviewed, Counseling and Clinical Psychology Journal. Here, in brief, is what Jack did
and what he found.
